money where our mouth is”.
So many communities across the United States are longing to take
positive action against climate change but don’t know where to start.
By representing your community and creating an account with us, you
have the opportunity to share this simple yet effective way to “put our
money where our mouth is”.
Ideally, a community’s Institution Rep will be familiar with the spirit of Laudato si’, rooted in faith, and desire to share their inspiration for climate action with their broader community.
In practical terms, it would mean getting the word out about CathCAP offset platform and
inviting people to get involved by outlining the many benefits it would offer to both local and
global communities.
What are the main steps?
1) Decide to become an Institution Rep
Anyone can become an Institution Rep, but a key component is having
a strong relationship with your community and being able to get
people on board. Don’t worry, though, we won’t leave you without
resources! For each kind of institution—parish, school, or university, or
other—we will provide you with a wide range of useful resources, such
as flyers and educational materials. You may also request specific
resources, and we will help you to the best of our ability.
The goal is to collaborate with institutions as we move along, constantly receiving feedback and
modifying the process accordingly. We want to serve your communities as best as we can, and
your input as Institution Rep is particularly valuable. In this role, you would get a unique
opportunity to co-create a culture of deeper care and responsibility among members of your
institution and your broader larger community as well, extending to family-members, friends,
and acquaintances. When momentum picks up, the initiative that you take could have an
enormous impact!
2) Create an account on our website
Creating an account is relatively simple—you can do it right here. Once you’ve opened an account for your institution, we will send you a follow-up email with additional information. From then on you will be able to log into our portal at any time and track your institution’s fund.
Your institution will have the option to create one shared fund, or several smaller funds, depending on the
community’s preference. For example, different grades in a school could make it a competition to see who can raise the most money, which would help garner enthusiasm for the contribution process. Alternatively, different departments at a university could decide to make different subaccounts, so they can make decisions on a smaller scale about where their funds are spent. There is also an option tailored to friends and family members in which people can sponsor a particular person or subaccount.

As an institution rep, you will be able to track all of this activity. Additionally, when logged into our portal, you will have access to all of the educational and promotional resources that we offer, tailored to your type of institution.
3) Decide as a community where you want to allocate the funds
Eventually, when enough funds are collected, your community has the chance to decide where the funds are allocated, as well as how that decision is made, as long as the project matches CathCAP guidelines. We will also provide options for funding existing carbon offset projects with organizations that we know and trust, as well as ideas and examples of local projects that your community could take on. Once we approve your chosen project, the sky’s the limit!
Regardless of whether you choose to support a local or global project, this stage of the process is
very exciting—this is where the fruit of your labor as Institution Rep and the fruit of people’s
contributions as community members will come to full bloom.
This is our vision in creating CathCAP: to involve community members in a process that puts Laudato si’ into action, in a way where each member has a stake in it and is thus committed to learn more and stay involved. It’s all the components of this process together—learning about the importance of living in the spirit of Laudato si’, deciding to make a small sacrifice for a large privilege, and seeing the fruits of community collaboration in action—that make this project truly unique and inspirational.
Thank you for taking the first step in this journey!
